The IRS is completing its backlog and is going through tens of millions of tax returns pending, including the filings from last year. If your 2020 tax return is among the pileup, there’s a particular procedure to follow to file your electronic tax return in 2021.

The IRS processed more than 61.9 million tax returns as of April 11, the vast majority electronically filed and the remaining prepared by self, it said. IRS said in its report.

If you self-prepare your tax return electronically and submit your tax return electronically, the IRS confirms your return using the net income adjusted. But, there’s a separate procedure for millions of filers who have an upcoming 2020 tax return.

Suppose the tax return for last year isn’t yet finalized. In that case, it’s necessary to input $0 as Your 2020 AGI when you file online as per National Taxpayer Advocate Erin Collins during a hearing before members of the House Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee.

“That allows you to file electronically and do not have fill out a paper form,” she said. “We have to get this message for taxpayers.”

These guidelines are only applicable for digital filers; the agency strongly encourages everyone to file electronically via direct deposit to ensure no delays.

Who electronically filed a little more than 94.3 per cent of tax returns during the financial year of 2020 as per IRS.

Additionally, there are similar guidelines for those who are not filers, which typically comprise specific Social Security recipients or those with incomes that are less than standard deductions.

If you’ve used this tool to collect advance tax credit for children payments or the stimulus check If you used the tool in 2021 to collect your stimulus check, the IRS recommends that you put in the amount of $1 to the previous year’s AGI.

“I would imagine that nobody knows about this one,” said certified financial planner Larry Harris, director of tax services at Parsec Financial in Asheville, North Carolina.

If you don’t adhere to these guidelines If you don’t follow these instructions, the IRS could not approve the return in electronic format, said Tommy Lucas, a CFP and an enrolled agent at Moisand Fitzgerald Tamayo in Orlando Florida.

“We’ve witnessed this happen from taxpayers trying to self-file,” he said, explaining that AGI issues can trigger confusion in the rejection emails from the tax-filing software.

The 2020 returns are not in the correct order.

If you received a CP80 notice regarding a missed 2020 return, who could also delay the return?

According to Lucas, if you’ve received this notification and it hasn’t yet been accepted, you must add $0 to the 2020 tax year when you file this year.

“They’re going to show zero within their database, therefore this is what I’d start by doing,” he said.

Suppose you find that the IRS refuses to accept your tax return with the 2020 AGI being $0. In that case, it is possible that they completed your return last year after having sent the notice, Lucas said, meaning you could file the 2021 return using the exact 2020 income.

Although it can be challenging to get in touch with the IRS via telephone, you can verify your income tax returns by downloading a tax transcript for free IRS transcript through your account online.
