DJ Kay Slay Dead at 55 Following COVID-19 Hospitalization

According to comments made to HipHopDX by Van Silk, the New York City icon died Sunday. Silk said that he and Kay Slay had been friends for many years. They were in talks about working again.

Silk shared: “Hip Hop has lost a real jewel,” HipHopDX. My dear brother has passed away. He was 16 years ago. He was my little brother. He was my little brother. We did many things together. We had just finished the 200-rolling deep project when we last spoke. He was going to do his video with MC Sha-Rock.

Silk also mentioned the Straight Stuntin’ magazine’s launch of Kay Slay’s educational How’s the Science podcast.

Silk stated that the world lost Silk, from the mixtapes to helping launch Straight Stuntin_ magazine and the entire What The Science projects and a truly dedicated person to Hip Hop culture. “I’m going to miss my little brother.”

The family stated that Keith Grayson, also known as DJ Kay Slay, has passed away. “A prominent figure in Hip Hop Culture with millions of followers worldwide, DJ Kay Slay will always be remembered for his passion and excellence. His legacy will last a lifetime. Our family would like to thank his fans and friends for their support and prayers during this difficult time. As we mourn this terrible loss, we ask you to respect our privacy.

Hot 97 also shared a statement where the Drama Hour era is cited. The station also remembers Kay Slay, a “cultural icon” who was vital in their journey.

A station representative said that Hot 97 was shocked and saddened at the loss of their beloved DJ Kay Slay. “We treasure the many memories he created over the past twenty-plus years of the ‘Drama Hour.’ Kay Slay was more than a DJ. He was a cultural icon and a key part of the success story that made Hot 97 what it is today. We are so sorry for his loved ones, friends, and fans worldwide and will continue to celebrate The Drama King’s legacy.

In January, DJ Kay Slay was in a hospital with COVID-19. Kwame Grayson-Kay Slay’s brother– told HipHopDX that the DJ and graffiti artist were “in a recovery condition” but “getting better.”

In December, DJ Kay Slay shared his The Soul Controller project. Snoop Dogg and The Game were among the collaborators on the nine-song album.

Following the news that DJ Kay Slay had died, several industry leaders and artists shared their condolence messages. These included remembrances about the many decades of artistry that made up his sustaining legacy.
