Angels Rookie Reid Detmers Throws No-Hitter Against Rays

Los Angeles Angels rookie Reid Detmers pitched a no-hitter against Tampa Bay Rays Tuesday night, the second such instance in the majors this season.

In the Angels’ 12-0 win over the Rays, Detmers threw 110 pitches, struck out two, and walked one batter. He got YandyDiaz to ground out shortstop Andrew Velazquez to end the game.

The 22-year-old picked up the no-hitter in his 10th major league appearance.

“Getting the last one was the best part. This is something I have always wished for since childhood. He said it after the game, “I didn’t believe it would ever come to pass.”

He may have had an advantage on the home field.

In the seventh, official scorer Mel Franks decided that Jared Walsh’s throw to the first baseman was off to his right. This resulted in Brett Phillips reaching safely.

Walsh stated, “I thought it was quite clearly an error.” Walsh said, “I don’t expect myself to make this play all the time. So I would have complained if they called it a hit.”

He said that he believed Who would have scored it an error even on the road.

He said, “I believe most people in the major leagues will admit that it was an error.”

Los Angeles received a power boost from the third baseman Anthony Rendon to cap off the win. Phillips was forced into the blowout to pitch the eighth inning. Rendon batted against him left-handed. Rendon, who is normally a righty, hit a two-run homer. This was Rendon’s fourth home run of the year. Mike Trout added two more dingers.

Detmers was the first Angels no-hitter since 2019 when Felix Pena and Taylor Cole combined to score a win against the Seattle Mariners. This was the team’s first home game since Tyler Skaggs’ death.

Detmers is the Angels’ youngest pitcher who has thrown a no-hitter and the first lefty to do so since Clyde Wright in July 1970.

He had a better mound presence tonight. Joe Maddon, the Angels manager, said that he just looked and felt the part. Hopefully, we will get lots of that residue in the future because he is capable of it. He might not be a no-hitter, but I think that is how he should pitch. This is what he should be looking like more often.
